I'm a Lutheran, and that means that, among other things, we hold opposite things in tension.
Luther's simul, Latin for at the same time, is usually applied to us Christians. We are at the same time both sinner and justified. The only way born again could be use of us is by applying it to baptism, and that means I don't make a decision for Jesus. Rather, Jesus makes a decision for me and out of sheer grace gives life with him as pure gift, for which I do absolutely nothing. For me, at a Lutheran, life is wrought with all kinds of complexities and a lot of gray areas in which a lot of discussion is necessary. I live with the confidence that what God has set out to do will get done. Isaiah 55:10-11 says it, As the rain falls from heaven and does not return until it has done what its purpose is, so also shall the word of God be. It will do that which it purposes to do. That word will not return empty but will accomplish that for which God purposed it. I am called to be faithful to the calling which God in Jesus has extended to me, and that is wholly oriented to my neighbor, who everybody who is not I and that includes the created order as well. The creation is also my neighbor. That's why we cannot choke the air with pollutants.
